This internship has gotten me thinking about college because it's showing me what kind of major I want to pursue. Knowing that has made me realize what kind of college I want to look at. I'm still not sure what college, but it has definitely made me realize where the right direction is for me. I've also realized that I want to study a subject in the STEM Field.
What I'm most thankful for in my internship experience is the actual experience to work in a place like Qualcomm. I love technology and this internship has made my appreciation towards it increase tremendously. I am very thankful for all the employees that work here since they have all been extremely helpful and nice towards my work and I. I am looking forward to hopefully coming back to help in any way possible and I am very thankful for the experience.
One of the biggest characteristics that I see in the employees around me has to be patience. Teaching how to code to 6th graders can be tough, so the teachers here are really patient and really understanding towards the struggle that some kids have. For example, today, a kid with severe autism came with the class and instead of giving up on him and just teaching the rest of the class, Vanessa slowed down and helped him get through all the steps. Being patient is seriously something I have to work on to improve my work ethic, and I'm hoping to work on it for the last week. Like I have I said before, taking this internship is really clearing my view of the future and what I want to pursue. I'm really glad I'm here and now I'm confident in telling people what major I want to pursue in college.
For my iPOL I have decided to make a presentation using Prezi. I have divided into 2 sections, my job as an intern and what I got out of this internship. I didn't put complete sentences on each slide, since I will be speaking as I go through each slide. Because of this, some slides might not make sense to you. I will be using some note cards to keep myself on track of the main question I should be answering, but I don't think I'm going to write a complete script. Click the file below to download and see my prezi.
Communication among employees is very important in Qualcomm. As an intern, I have two jobs, being the data analyst and helping Jennifer during her lesson. Both jobs require a lot of communication between the employees and I. For example, we have to keep Gloria (the manager of government affairs at the thinkabit lab) updated with all of the data we collect. When Nathan and I are helping Jennifer, we follow her instructions and communicate each morning, since her lesson plan might change from the day to day. Another example is our month long project. It will be passed down to the upcoming interns on a daily basis, so it is good for them to know that we are on track so that when their meetings do come up, they can count on the information we have been collecting and analyzing.
The original project that I'm doing is going really well. Each day I'm capturing the responses that the kids write, and it's going really well. Throughout doing this project I have learned many things such using excel, organizing my work and improving my communication abilities with both kids and adults. The second project that I was going to work on (the RC Cars) is not going as well. This is because we had the idea to use the 3D printer, but when we were ready to print, it wouldn't print what we wanted. We have changed our small project to something else. Nathan and I have decided to build a map with LED lights signaling where Qualcomm's offices are worldwide. This can help Jennifer out when shes given her lesson, or it can help visitors understand more about the world of Qualcomm. This project is going good, and we're hoping to be finished with it before we do our iPOLS.
What I do in my internship can be compared to school work in a small way. What I do every day is I document what the kids say they want to be when they grow up. I put all that information in an excel sheet, along with the information on the release sheet and the reflections the kids write at the end of the day. This is not really something I do at school, but I do work on a computer a lot at school and I work on a computer a lot here (but I have to say that working on a computer here is better). Like I written before, this internship might influence my direction of life by showing me if I can see myself working at the environment I’m working at here. What I can bring to internship from school is my work ethic. I’m confident enough to say that I’m a hard worker at school and I push myself, so I’m willing to bring that to my internship in any way possible. I really see myself working in a place like this in the future, so this internship is helping me in so many ways that include my education as well as my future.
I believe the lesson I'm bringing back to school from my internship is to always think ahead or take some time to think before starting a project. I learned this lesson because I’ve been working on a spreadsheet and put the information in a place that makes it harder to print out. I didn't take this into consideration when I was adding the information. Luckily, there was a way to fix it. When I come back to school, I'm going to work on thinking ahead on project so I don't have do extra unnecessary work because I wasn't thinking when I started the project. I also believe that when I come back to school, my communication skills are going to improve as well as my interactions with young kids and adults. This internship is also making me more responsible when it comes to work. I hope this internship will also give me more lessons to take back to school.
